How to read a dog treat ingredient list

A short ingredient list makes it easier to know what you’re giving your dog. Here’s how to read any treat label — ours included.

Order matters

On U.S. pet food labels, ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, so the first few ingredients make up most of the product.

Check for known sensitivities

If your dog reacts to a particular food, read every ingredient, including eggs, nuts such as almond or peanut, and dairy such as yogurt. Several of our biscuits use almond flour and egg; Strawberries and Cream also contains Greek yogurt and honey. When in doubt, ask your veterinarian before trying something new.

Foods to keep away from dogs

Some human foods are dangerous for dogs, including chocolate, grapes and raisins, onions and garlic, and products sweetened with xylitol. If you ever share peanut butter at home, check its label for xylitol first.

Front-of-bag words are marketing; the ingredient list is the part regulators require. Use the list to decide.
